Work through these steps in order.
- Stay off the roof and away from downed lines.
- Photograph damage outside and inside, with dates.
- Protect belongings and catch drips.
- Get temporary protection if water is coming in. See emergency roof repair.
- Schedule a storm damage inspection.
- Review your policy and contact your insurer.
- Keep receipts for any emergency costs.

Watch for Storm Chasers
After big storms, out-of-area crews go door to door. Protect yourself.
- Verify a local address and state license.
- Don't sign anything that assigns your insurance benefits on the spot.
- Be wary of anyone offering to 'cover your deductible.'
- Get a written scope before work starts.
